Weekend Backpack Program

coordinator: Luanne warren

Many children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend?

For many years, New Salem UMC has been helping children get the nutritious and easy-to-prepare food they need to get enough to eat on the weekends. Bags of food are assembled at the church and then delivered to Cool Springs Elementary School at the end of the week. With your help, we can provide more food to more children in need by donating items to the food pantry or by giving monetary donations to the backpack program. A list of recommended items is listed below. For more information please call the office 704-872-6097.

Food item suggestions include:

Mac-n-cheese Jelly (squeeze bottles)

Pop Tarts Granola Bars

Cereal Flavored Rice/noodles

Ramen Noodles Canned Tuna/Chicken

Oatmeal Vienna Sausages

Grits Canned Fruit/Veggies

Peanut Butter Crackers

Chef Boyardee Instant Potatoes

Any other Non-Perishable items that would be suitable for a lunchbox.

Other ways to help:

Prayerfully consider giving a cash donation. Write backpack on your check memo line or on the offering envelope and place in the offering plate or mail to the office. (New Salem UMC, 155 New Salem Road, Statesville, NC 28625)
